SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES
JLB Ranch is committed to sustainable ranching practices. For us, it’s common sense! We are fortunate to have access to one of the most valuable and diverse ecosystems on the planet and preservation of this valuable resource is our responsibility. The tillable land on the ranch raises feedstuffs, providing a nutritional option to supplement winter grazing, backgrounding and weaning.
Burning the Flint Hills grasslands is one of the most effective methods of controlling invasive species like the eastern red cedar. Prescribed burning is conducted in early to mid-April as a method to sustain the forage quality of the ecosystem. Burning helps minimize weed growth, puts nutrients from old plant material back into the soil, and eliminates many pests and diseases.
